Our young speakers took the microphone

Children and teenagers introduced segments, read poetry and spoke to a full hall at our Black History Month event in Barrie. Confidence is learned out loud.

One of the clearest things about our Black History Month event was how much of it was carried by young people.

Children and teenagers introduced segments, read pieces they had written, sat on the panel and answered questions in front of a full room. Some had never held a microphone before.

Why we hand over the microphone

Confidence is not a personality trait, it is practice. A young person who has spoken to a hundred people at eleven walks into a job interview at twenty differently.

Our youth work is built around that: real audiences, real stakes, real support in the weeks beforehand.
